Course Outline
Students of all levels of familiarity with proteomics, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics are welcome to attend this introductory course to proteomics bioinformatics. Students will begin with an overview of the basics of proteomics followed by a look at the technology at its core: mass spectrometry. After a quick introduction into the proteome and its relevance to modern biosciences we will describe some the main concepts related to proteomics bioinformatics and also cite some tools that are available. In particular we will discuss the step after data acquisition: data interpretation followed by public data submission. Here we will see some of the nuances of mass spec proteomics, in particular the fidelity of results over time. Students will complete the course with a "hands on" practical session of spectrum identification and submission to a public proteomics database.
After completing this exercise students will be capable of analysing their own proteomics data and be familiarised with the related EBI resources: the PRIDE database and associated tools ( PRIDE Converter 2, PRIDE Inspector), and how to submit and/or retrieve public data to/from the ProteomeXchange Consortium.
This session will usually be offered as one of a number of short introductions to EBI Services that can be booked separately.
Please note that if you are not eligible for a University of Cambridge Raven account you will need to book by completing the form available from the appropriate Booking System Page.
Please only book for our courses if you are seriously intending to attend.
Without your co-operation, we cannot sustain the provision of widely available, inexpensive/free, high quality training.
We ask for 5 working days notice of cancellation, time to alert the next person on the waiting list.
None of our current courses requires you to bring your own computer. However, if you want to bring a laptop and have it online we can arrange access via the University Lapwing wireless service.
All our courses are a part of the Training Programme of the Graduate School of Life Sciences.
A full list of Bioinformatics courses offered by the School of Biological Sciences can be found here.
A number of other excellent programmes of Bioinformatics courses are offered by various Institutions. These include:
In the UK.
In the rest of Europe.
Other relevant events.
The course will be conducted in:
Room G12-13, Department of Genetics, University of Cambridge,
Tennis Court Road, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB2 3EH
Some helpful information on how to get here can be found in the Genetics Department's web pages.
The Department of Genetics has wheelchair access to the main entrance. G12-13 is on the ground floor where there are toilets suitable for wheelchair users. It is possible to use most of our workstations in a wheelchair, but if you would like to reserve a workstation (at the back of the class) which has more room for easy manoevour, or you have any other queries or particular requirements, please ask.
